Background information


  • In vintage 1996: no information about batonnage.
  • In vintage 1999: batonnage done once a week through the end of April 2000 and "then stopped for three weeks to allow the malos to finish." Then resumed stirring and continued to do so through at least the end of June 2000. Girardin described the stirring as lasting for a "longer period of time than normal." Note: Girardin touted to Tanzer "the low levels of sulphur Girardin uses."
  • In vintage 2000: batonnage again used extensively, but frequency and length not disclosed. At the time of Tanzer's visit in late May/early June of 2001, Girardin "was still actively stirring the lees of the cuvees he felt were especially acidic."
  • In vintage 2002: "It was clear from the beginning that ’02 was a very rich vintage and thus I did much less bâtonnage than usual and in some cases, I did none at all. I’m trying more and more to privilege the sense of minerality in my wines, indeed to make them much more terroiroriented than I have in the past."
  • In vintage 2003: No batonnage
  • In vintage 2004: No batonnage at all and virtually no debourbage (gross lees settling)
  • In vintage 2005: No batonnage
  • In vintage 2010: bottles with 30 ppm of free SO2
